ART IN PUBLIC PLACES
September 1997
Dear Jan Loeffler,
On behalf of the Art in Public Places Committee of the Longmont Council for the Arts, thank you for submitting your entry for the Kensington Park Project. A selection panel convened on September 16th to review proposals by twenty-seven Colorado artists and select three semi-finalists for the project. The submissions reflected a wide variety of media and styles.
The high quality of the artwork represented and proposals submitted made the selection process very competitive. We regret that you not selected as a finalist for this project, but encourage you to apply for future projects.
Thank you for your interest in Longmont’s public art program.
Sincerely - Stephanie Ehret, Administrator - Art in Public Places        > Page Up

1999/2000  Kensington Park Artwork
New artwork brings a neighborhood together
Kensington Park will soon be the home of a new public art piece. "The Unity Project", designed by artists Susan Daily and Mario Echevarria will be complete by the end of July. It was chosen from 21 entries from throughout Colorado.
The objective of "The Unity Project" is to bring together Kensington Park neighbors to collaborate on an artwork born from and commemorating community spirit and pride.
The wall, measuring 7' high by 11' long, will echo the shapes of mountains in the Colorado landscape. It will be made of highly durable concrete treated to resemble adobe. On the front side of the wall will be a brightly colored tile mosaic depicting individuals, images and events related to Kensington Park. Gathering these diverse elements in a huge embrace is the image of a woman - an allegorical representation of "Unity".
While the artists will create the central image, the background will be determined by members of the Kensington Park community. Everyone involved in creating the artwork will leave their "signature" as a handprint on the back side of the wall.
"The Unity Project" is the 15th artwork to be commissioned by Longmont's Art in Public Places Program, a joint project between the City of Longmont and the Longmont Council for the Arts. The program was established in 1987 through an ordinance designating 1% of all capital improvement projects over $50,000 for public art.   READ > not selected 1997
