The last Royal Harpist was appointed by Queen Victoria in 1871. The post was recreated by The Prince of Wales, who issued the following statement:
"I hope that by re-establishing this position I can not only give support and recognition to a young harpist of ability like Catrin, but that I can help to encourage appreciation of the harp and its importance to Welsh culture and tradition.

Catrin Finch is a native of Llanon, Wales, and currently studies at London's Royal Academy of Music. She will make her New York debut next season, on 17 April 2001, in the Young Concert Artists Series at the 92nd Street Y. In January 2000 she won First Prize of the 2000 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and in 1999, she was awarded First Prize at the Lily Laskine International Harp Competition in France.
Ms. Finch gave her first perfomance as Royal Harpist on 11 May 2000 at a private dinner in Port Talbot. The Prince of Wales has heard her perform twice previously, at a concert that he attended at the Purcell School of Music in London, and at his 50th Birthday Celebration at Buckingham Palace.

Jahrhunderts in Vergessenheit geraten sei. (dpa)
