Indian
art was peculiarly tied to the idea of the nation for nearly a century.
This unifying thread ran from Ravi Varma's homogenising impulse through
M.F. Husain's celebratory myth-making to the radical critiques of the nation
by painters who emerged in the 70s. The last ten years, however, have seen
a diminishing interest in the idea of India among young artists. This is
a symptom, no doubt, of the recession in activism among urban Indians and
the loss of a sense that art can actually make a difference in social life.
